2. ID card, Bank account & BankID

Practical steps once you have received your personal identification number

Swedish ID card
Once you have received your personal identification number, you can apply for an ID card from the Swedish Tax Agency. The ID card is used to prove your identity in Sweden.

Bank account
Contact a Swedish bank to open a bank account. The bank will determine what documents you need to show and make an individual assessment.

BankID
BankID is Sweden's most common electronic identification and is used for online banking, government contacts, healthcare services and digital signing, among other things. BankID is issued by banks and the terms and conditions may differ between banks.

Good to know: A Swedish ID card and BankID are not the same thing. The ID card is a physical form of identification, while BankID is an electronic form of identification.

4. Car & vehicle registration

Take your car with you when you move to Sweden

Are you moving your car to Sweden?
If you bring a vehicle from another EU/EEA country, it normally needs to be registered in Sweden if you are going to use it here permanently.

Origin control
The first step is to apply for origin control with the Swedish Transport Agency. You need to submit documents that show the origin of the vehicle and that you own it.

Registration inspection
Once the origin check is approved, you book a registration inspection with an inspection company. The vehicle can then be registered and given Swedish registration plates.

Insurance & vehicle tax
A registered vehicle used in traffic requires motor vehicle insurance. You may also need to pay Swedish vehicle tax.

Documents that may be needed

  • Foreign registration certificate

  • Bill of sale/receipt or other document showing ownership

  • Identity document

  • Other documents depending on vehicle and country of origin

Apply for origin control at the Swedish Transport Agency.

5. Driving license

Your foreign driving license in Sweden

Driving license from EU/EEA
A valid driving license from an EU/EEA country is valid in Sweden, even after you have registered here. So you normally do not need to exchange it immediately.

Change to a Swedish driving license
If you are a permanent resident of Sweden, you can exchange a valid EEA driving license for a Swedish driving license under certain conditions.

Driving licenses from countries outside the EEA
Different rules apply to driving licenses from countries outside the EEA. They normally no longer apply when you have been registered in Sweden for more than a year, with some exceptions.

Good to know: Swedish traffic and driving license regulations also apply when you drive with a foreign driving license.
